Use the microwave oven, which
consumes 60% less energy than the conventional oven, when
cooking small portions of food. |
 |
Select a refrigerator with
a "Grade 1" Energy Label saves you 30% of your electricity
consumption. Refrain from opening the door frequently
and this keeps your food cold and hygienic. |
 |
Chop food into small pieces
before putting them into the blender. This makes the blender
more durable and saves more energy. |
 |
Turn off the oven five to 10
minutes before the food is done to make use of the residual
heat in cooking. Use the timer wisely to avoid over-cooking
and energy waste. |
 |
Maintain your appliances properly
for optimal energy efficiency performance. (What kind
of appliances? Kettle, cooker, vacuum cleaner, thermo
pot, exhaust hood, iron, toaster, or you name it!) |
 |
Iron clothing in bulk. Handle
clothing that requires high heat first. Then turn off
the iron and make use of the residual heat to iron other
clothing that requires careful treatment. |
 |
Blow-dry your hair to almost
dry and leave it to air dry. It saves energy and keeps
your hair smooth and easy-to-comb. |
 |
Select a washing machine with
"Grade 1" Energy Label. Use the machine only when you
have a full load and wash in cold water. Dry clothes in
sunlight whenever possible. |
 |
Shower bath consumes 50% less
hot water and energy using a bathtub. Adjust your heater
to optimal temperature (and avoid being too hot). This
is good to your skin and to your electricity bill. |

A room cooler with "Grade 1"
Energy Label saves 15% power consumption. In fact, air-conditioning
accounts for a large part of your electricity bill in
summer. |
 |
Your mobile phone costs you
only HK$1.4 a year for re-charging. Enjoy your conversation
with your pals but do take hot of the time spent and the
phone bill. |
 |
Select T8 and T5 energy efficient
fluorescent tubes, which consume 10% to 30% less energy
than conventional ones. |
 |
Don't treat your TV as a radio!
TV costs you more if what you need is just a radio! |
 |
Close the windows to keep
the room warm when your heater is on. With a warm room,
you can adjust the heater to a lower temperature and that
saves energy. |
 |
Turn off the television, Hi-Fi,
video recorder, lights, air-conditioners and any other
facilities when not in use. |
 |
Clean the filter and cooling
coil of your room cooler regularly to maintain it in top
condition. Enjoy cool and clean air. |
 |
Use the computer one hour
less each day. Instead of playing TV games, chat with
friends or do healthy exercises. |

 |
Pre-set the timer
of your air-conditioning unit to provide cool air only
during office hours. Some offices turn on their unit round
the clock but their staff members only work eight to 10
hours. Does it happen in your office? Imagine, you can
save more than half of the electricity by just adjusting
the operating time of your unit. |
 |
Have you heard
of a trendy approach called zoning? You may not have staff
working in every corner of the building. Lighting and
air-conditioning are provided for working zones only.
With the exception of the special material or equipment
that requires cooling, lights and
air-conditioners in empty conference rooms, storage rooms
and multi-purpose rooms should be turned off. Alternatively,
you may install lighting zone control or occupancy sensors
that automatically control lighting. |
 |
Ask your cleaners to clean lighting luminaries and filters of air-conditioners, as well as replace the dust bags of the vacuum cleaners regularly. This increases efficiency and durability of the appliances. |
 |
Use compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes as much as possible. They consume 70% to 80% less electricity than conventional tubes. The "white" light given by the former makes the office look brighter and cleaner than the room in "yellowish" light. |
 |
Saving energy in the common area of your office building is part of your responsibility. Request the estate management office to switch off lighting, air-conditioning, escalator service (partial or whole depending on actual need) and lift service during non-office hours such as Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays. |
 |
Achieving "zero
wastage" is equally important as the target for "zero
accident". Environmental protection is a good habit to
adopt, and it is also part of a good corporate culture.
Make it a habit to switch off the lights when you leave
the meeting room or your office, and turn off the PC after
work. |
 |
Make use of natural daylight as much as possible. |
 |
Purchase office equipment with energy-saving features, such as photocopiers and laser printers bearing "Energy Labels". |
 |
Adopt paper-reducing strategies such as double-sided printing, and sending email instead of fax. |
 |
Install self-closing
doors in non air-conditioned spaces to reduce excessive
infiltration and
ex-filtration. |
