| "Energy-efficient appliances" are energy
saving appliances. |
 |
In 1995, the Hong Kong Government
introduced the "Energy
Efficiency Labelling Scheme" (EEL) which tells consumers
the energy efficiency level of a particular electrical appliance
with an "energy label".
At present, nine major types of domestic appliances (television, refrigerator, air-conditioner, washing machine, compact fluorescent lamp, electric clothes dryer, household electric storage water heater, electric rice cooker and dehumidifiers) have been classified under the EEL scheme.
Electrical appliances under the EEL scheme are tagged with an "energy label" of either "Grading Type" or "Recognition Type". The "Grading Type" label bears the following information:
 |
| | 1 |
Annual Energy Consumption |
| | | The average energy consumption level of an electrical appliance as measured in one year of operation. | | |
| | 2. |
Energy Efficiency Grade (EEG) |
| | |
The "EEG" ranking is from grade 1
to 5, with
"Grade 1" being the most energy-efficient, while
"Grade 3" being the average. |
| | | | 3. |
(Product) Category |
| | |
Each electrical appliance is classified
by its mechanical or operational type, enabling
consumers to make a comparison within the same product
category. |
| | | | 4. | EEL Registration Number |
| | |
Appliances tested and accepted
by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department
will be assigned its own registration number. |
|
| The EEG ranking categorises the relative
energy-efficiency performance of domestic electrical appliances
from grade 1 to 5, with Grade 1 being the most efficient,
and Grade 3 being the general average amongst the same
product category. Here are examples of EEG Grade 1 to
3: |

| The "Recognition Type" energy labels do
not provide information about the energy consumed. They
only certify that the labelled products have met the minimum
energy efficiency requirements stipulated in the EEL scheme. |
